Abstract of Specifications from the SDRT Archives

Six-Wheel Coupled Goods Engines and Tenders February 1880 Nos 25-28 Vulcan
Milton & Bradley p 117 SDRT A 42

The Boiler to receive two coats of Oxalic Paint before being lagged with Wood. Frames, Splashers, Handrail, and Weather Screen, two coats of Oxalic Paint. Wheels one coat of Oxalic Paint, finished with two coats of Green to sample supplied, and two coats of Varnish. After lagging the Boiler, Splashers, Cabs, &c., to have one coat of Lead colour, two coats of Stopping, three coats of filling up, properly rubbed down, two coats of Lead colour, Sand papered, two coats of Green to sample, picked out with Black and fine lined with White, Rim of Tyre to be Black edged with White. Inside of Frames and the Axles to be finished with Vermilion and one of Varnish. Outside of Frames, Sand Boxes, Guards, &c., to be finished Brown to pattern, picked out with Black and fine lined with white. Buffer planks to be finished off Vermilion and Varnished. Smoke-box, Chimney, back of Fire-box, Platforms, Steps &c., to be painted Black. Two coats inside of Cab to be prepared similar to Boiler and Frame, finished in Brown and lined. Brass Number Plates and Initials of Railway, &c., to instructions.

Tender

The outside of the Tank to be prepared and finished in a manner similar to the Engine Boiler covering. Wheels and outside of Frames to have two coats of Lead colour. Coalspace, Foot Plate, lower Tank or Well, bottom of Tank, and Brake Work under tender, to have two coats of Black.

Wheels one coat of Oxalic Paint, finished with two coats of Purple Brown " Red Oxide " to sample supplied, and two coats of Varnish. After lagging the Boiler, Splashers, Cabs, &c., to have one coat of Lead colour, two coats of Stopping, three coats of filling up, properly rubbed down, two coats of Lead colour, Sand papered, two coats of Oxide to sample, picked out with Black and fine lined with White, Rim of Tyre to be Black edged with White. Inside of Frames and the Axles to be finished with Vermillion and one of Varnish. Outside of Frames, Sand Boxes, Guards, &c., to be finished to pattern, picked out with Black and fine lined with white. Outside Angle Iron to be finished in Purple Brown, picked out with Black, and fine lined with White. Buffer planks to be finished off Vermillion and Varnished. Smoke-box, Chimney, back of Fire-box, Platforms, Steps &c., to be painted Black. Two coats inside of Cab to be prepared similar to Boiler and Frame, finished in Brown and lined. Brass Number Plates and Initials of Railway, &c., to instructions.

Tender

The outside of the Tank to be prepared and finished in a manner similar to the Engine Boiler covering. Wheels and outside of Frames to have two coats of Lead colour. Coalspace, Foot Plate, lower Tank or Well, bottom of Tank, and Brake Work under tender, to have two coats of Black.

Wheels one coat of Oxalic Paint, then one coat of Stopping, rubbed down, then two coats of Oxalic Paint, finished with two coats of Green to sample supplied, and two coats of Varnish. After lagging the Boiler, Splashers, Cabs, &c., to have one coat of Lead colour, two coats of Stopping, three coats of filling up, properly rubbed down, two coats of Lead color, Sandpapered, two coats of Green to sample, picked out with Black and fine lined with White, Rim of Tyre to be Black edged with White. Inside of Frames and the Axles to be finished with Vermilion and one of Varnish. Outside of Frames, Sand Boxes, Guards, &c., to be finished Brown, picked out with Black and fine lined with white. Buffer planks to be finished off Green and Varnished. Smoke-box, Chimney, back of Fire-box, Platforms, Steps &c., to be painted Black. Two coats inside of Cab to be prepared similar to Boiler and Frame, finished in Brown and lined. Insides of Tanks and Coal Bunkers, Tool boxes, &c., two coats of thick Red Lead. Milton & Bradley report (p 198) that the livery changed to blue from March 1886. However, SDRT archives contain no locomotive specifications relating.

SDRT A44 & A51

The whole of the outside to be painted with three coats of White Lead Paint, and five of filling up. After the facing-down, to have three coats of Lead Colour, one of Dark Blue (Prussian Blue and a little White Lead mixed), two coats of Ultramarine, and four coats of Body Varnish.
