88 Back In Service

The Somerset and Dorset Railway Trusts S&DJR 7F 2-8-0 locomotive 88 has returned to steam on the WSR following fitting of a new regulator that has been designed by the WSR CME Andrew Forster. 88 was in steam again on the 20th May 2010 at Minehead and made some moves in the yard and shunted some stock. On the 21st May 88 double headed with 9351 to Bishops Lydeard and performed well. 88 was coupled inside 9351 and according to the driver pushed 9351 up the
banks, so no shortage of steam.
The old regulator on 88 was originally designed for use on the Midland
Compounds and as such when first opened would have allowed saturated
high pressure steam through to the low pressure cylinders to help with
starting. Over the years it had become very stiff to use, there have
been several attempts to find a solution to this with out success. The
new regulator is of a design similar to that used on Black Five
locomotives and has larger ports than the old regulator and is much
smoother to use.
