North Dorset Trailway

Ambitious plans to continue development of the North Dorset Trailway were outlined at a recent meeting in Sturminster Newton. The Trust was pleased to be represented by its Webmaster at a presentation about the next steps for the Trailway Project: the ultimate aim is to reopen the Somerset and Dorset Railway trackbed as a trailway linking towns and villages in North Dorset. Colleagues from the Shillingstone Project were also at the event. Currently the following sections are open to the public:

  • Stalbridge - 0.4 miles
  • Shillingstone - 1.5 miles
  • Sturminster Newton - 0.6 miles
  • Blandford - 0.6 miles
  • Charlton Marshall to Spetisbury - 1.9 miles

In time all of these sections will be joined to form a continuous trailway from Stalbridge to Spetisbury. The next section to be opened is the connection between Spetisbury and Blandford, which is planned for the near future.
